Integration

BIRT iServer Express is a BIRT report server that deploys, manages, schedules, secures, runs and distributes BIRT reports. It embeds the Eclipse BIRT Engine and Java APIs.  It is compatible with reports developed with any BIRT Designer including BIRT Studio.  It also works with the BIRT Viewer and BIRT Interactive Viewer. It can be deployed as a stand-alone report server or as a behind-the-scenes reporting service for other applications.

Features: Integration

BIRT iServer Express can operate stand-alone or be integrated with other applications. It possesses an open, standards-based architecture for integration with Web Services, enterprise applications, back-end data sources and e-business applications and platforms. BIRT iServer can adopt the look and feel of other applications while still operating stand-alone, it can be invoked via URLs embedded in other applications, or it can be integrated at a granular level using its extensive Web Services API.

Rich Internet Application Integration
BIRT Reports viewed from the server can be accessed via Java Script API's , an AJAX-based JavaScript library that allows the report viewer, reportlet or parameters to be embedded into any web application. The API's allow developers to publish and reference the services of the BIRT Viewer from a client application.

The JavaScript API enables HTML developers to:

  • Insert custom actions in a report output document and link multiple visualizations.
  • Insert BIRT reports or reportlets into mashup pages.
  • Link different components of a mashup page, including BIRT reports, to interact with each other.
  • Enable out-of-the box interactions available with the BIRT Interactive Viewer.

Application Integration
BIRT iServer Express can adopt the look and feel of other applications, be called by other applications or act as a provider of BIRT report services to other applications including report generation, viewing, and printing; report encyclopedia management; server administration; and security and authentication services.

  • Look and Feel Integration - an editable JSP user interface can be made to adopt the look and feel of other applications; for example, ERP systems or web sites, and still operate stand-alone.
  • Hyperlinks from other Applications - BIRT iServer Express reports and functions can be called from URLs in other web applications; for example, to embed reports in other applications.
  • Provider of Reporting Services - 100% of BIRT iServer Express functions can be accessed by external applications via SOAP calls to the Web Services API or by using the published WSDL descriptions.

Leveraging Existing Infrastructure
When an existing infrastructure is in place, BIRT iServer Express can leverage the external technology stack including security systems, data sources, and web infrastructure. With its URL-based architecture, pure SOAP5-based Web Services API, seamless integration with J2EE and support for open Web standards, any BIRT iServer Express service can be easily embedded into even the most complex environment.

  • Security - the BIRT iServer Express security model offers the option to leverage external security systems and supports single sign-on when not operating stand-alone.
  • Data Sources - BIRT iServer Express can access the data sources supported by any of the BIRT Designers.
  • Additional Systems - BIRT iServer Express integrates with a variety of other infrastructure products, including web application servers, system management tools, portal servers, business process automation and workflow engines, enterprise social networking platforms, team collaboration software and other service-oriented applications.
