Optional Meta Data Layer
BIRT iServer is a report server with a variety of services that deploy, manage, schedule, secure, run and distribute BIRT documents and web pages. The services can be phased in and capacity purchased to support just the services needed. It is available as a Platform-as-a-Service (BIRT OnDemand), can be implemented on premises, or installed in a cloud.
Features: Optional Meta Data Layer
BIRT iServer includes an optional meta data layer to hide data structure and complexity from end users and to integrate data from disparate data sources in real time. This enables end users to create their own reports and documents without having to know how and where the data is stored. This metadata layer can be created and used gradually over time, instead of requiring a lengthy data modeling project up front. It supports the same data sources as all of the BIRT Designers.
Incremental and Optional Development
With the BIRT iServer meta data layer, developers can incrementally model and abstract operational data sources as user requirements demand them and create “Information Objects”. This makes it possible for an organization to build out only the areas of the metadata model that are the most important to them.
- Simplifies Application Development – isolates the complex query design operation from report layout operation
- Open Data Access Framework – supports developing access to any custom data source.
- Standardized Data Access – provides a uniform way to access data across the entire Actuate platform
- Graphical Development Environment – BIRT Information Designer is a perspective in the BIRT Designer Professional and allows easy development of data integration procedures and business rules.
Information Objects Present Data to Users in Business Terms
Presents users of BIRT Studio with Information Objects with data and queries embedded and presented in business terms, shielding users from the complexity and detail of the physical data structure.
- Easy End-user Ad Hoc Reporting – users create their own reports by dragging and dropping the desired data onto a report template.
- Keeps IT in Control of Data – Information Objects give IT control over queries while providing easy data access to non-technical users.
EII-powered Disparate Data Source Integration and Caching
iServer includes Enterprise Information Integration (EII) technology that can integrate multiple data sources in real time. This product integrates the data from the disparate sources in memory and then presents it to a report as though it were from a single data source.
- EII Technology – creates virtual metadata views in business terms for use in reports.
- Powerful Data Integration – provides real-time access to multiple data sources so they appear as a single source.
- Automatic Data Caching – maximizes report performance by integrating the data in memory and caching it instead of physically storing it. Automatic updates to these can be scheduled.
Security with Flexibility
Security layers and flexibility offered by adding granular control over query and data access.
- Integrated Data Security – BIRT Information Designer can leverage the BIRT iServer security model and any security embedded in the data source.
- Global Programmable Query Governors – queries can be configured for extra safety and control; for example, to abort any query that delivers more than a specified number of rows or takes more than a certain length of time to process.
