Self-service Report Creation

BIRT Studio is an ad-hoc reporting tool for business users to create BIRT-based reports using the reusable components created by BIRT developers in an Eclipse BIRT Designer or BIRT Designer Pro from Actuate. It is an AJAX-based business intelligence tool accessed from a web browser with no client software to install. With BIRT Studio, users can create charts and graphs; add, rearrange, reformat, show and hide data; and change report, row, column and cell formatting to create their own BIRT output.

BIRT Studio is implemented as a service of the BIRT iServer. For BIRT ISVs and SaaS vendors wishing to include BIRT Studio in their product, it can be embedded as a component or with the BIRT Deployment Kit.

Self-service Report Creation

BIRT Studio features easy drag-and-drop construction that allows users to work from an existing template and select or modify report elements, report formatting, add data and preview the report populated with data as it is created.

Report Elements
Business users interact with a variety of BIRT report elements that are available for the template from which they are working. Typically, some of these elements are modifiable and some are fixed.

  • Fixed Report Elements â€“ elements pre-populated with text or data; for example, an Order Invoice template may have the name, address, and company logo.
  • Modifiable Report Elements â€“ elements such as labels, headers and tables can be pre-populated during template design or can serve as place-holders for business users to populate.

Data Preview
BIRT Studio allows users to preview a report populated with data as they drag and drop modular, predefined data objects onto the template during the report building process.

  • Drag-and-Drop Queries â€“ executes a query that loads and presents a manageable subset of data into the report as users drag and drop the predefined data object onto the report.
  • Configurable Data Set Size â€“ provides control over the size of the dataset used by BIRT Studio when creating the report to achieve optimal performance.

Report Formatting and Charts
With BIRT Studio, business users can reformat the elements and components of BIRT reports to meet their analysis needs and personal preferences.

  • Conditional Formatting â€“ modifies the format properties such as fonts, background column and accents based on a data condition. For example, change the font for all products that have sold below target to "Red".
  • Merge Columns â€“ merges two columns stacking values on top of each other to create a report with multiple detail lines.
  • Merge Column header cells â€“ merges column header cells to create additional column classifications.
  • Format Elements â€“ modifies fonts and alignment.
  • Format Data â€“ controls the display of the value based on the data type; for example, display numeric value as currency with dollar symbol and two decimal points.
  • Add Column Header Row â€“ adds column headers rows.
  • Re-order Columns – changes column order.

Charts
A user of BIRT Studio can add a chart from any report element.

  • Bar chart and line charts.
  • Area and pie charts.
  • Scatter and stock charts.
