Interactive Reporting

BIRT Interactive Viewer is an end user tool to interactively analyze and modify BIRT content and reports on the web, relieving BIRT developers from having to create every iteration themselves. With BIRT Interactive Viewer users can change BIRT web output formatting; hide, add or move data; create charts, sort data and apply functions to data. The BIRT Interactive Viewer supports all the features of the Eclipse BIRT Sample Viewer and BIRT Viewer, is compatible with reports developed with Eclipse BIRT and can view BIRT Data Objects with BIRT Data Analyzer. BIRT Interactive Viewer presents users with an intuitive, AJAX-based UI with no plug-ins or software to install.

In addition to supporting Flash objects with client-side JavaScript to make the reports interactive, it also has a JavaScript API to integrate application content from the server.

BIRT Interactive Viewer is implemented as a viewing service of the BIRT iServer. For BIRT ISV’s and SaaS vendors wishing to include BIRT Interactive Viewer in their product, it can be embedded as a component or with the BIRT Deployment Kit.

Features: Interactive Report Analysis

BIRT Interactive Viewer provides a variety of interactive features to help users analyze the data in the report, arranging the data to support the insight they are seeking. A right-click context menu extends an invitation to interact making it easy for the user to discover the interactivity offered. Users can organize report data sets; sort a data column in ascending or descending order; organize data into groups: aggregate data; and calculate numbers such as sums, standard deviations, rankings, and differences.

Reorder, Hide, Merge and Remove Columns
The BIRT Interactive Viewer lets users make changes to report columns.

  • Add Columns
  • Change Column Order
  • Move Data Values from a Column to a Group
  • Remove Columns
  • Hide Columns
  • Drag and drop functionality to move columns

Sort, Group and Ungroup Data
With With BIRT Interactive Viewer, end users can group data if the design does not contain the desired grouping, without affecting the underlying report design. There are several grouping functions.

  • Simple Sort on a Single Column - sorts single columns using ascending or descending sort options
  • Advanced Sort on Multiple columns - sorts multiple columns using up to three criteria
  • Add a Group - creates a group where no group formerly existed; for example, group data based on date or time data - set a grouping interval; or if the column contains time data, group on hours, minutes, or seconds
  • Remove an Inner Group - ungroup a column or table in a report

Create Calculations and Summaries
BIRT Interactive Viewer supports standard mathematical functions, along with standard operators and the use of numbers and dates in expressions.

  • Standard Mathematical Functions - performs calculations using counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and more
  • Standard Operators - performs basic calculations using common operators, including plus (+), minus (-), multiplied by (*), divided by (/), and more
  • Expressions - extends basic functions beyond simple calculations; for example, users can create a column that displays date values that are greater than the date values in another column
  • Aggregate Data - aggregates data by performing a calculation over a set of data rows; for example, in a report that has a column to calculate price times quantity, take the sum of all those calculations to obtain the total price of all items. Users can create up to three aggregations for a calculated column
  • Filter Data - prevents certain data from displaying in a report
  • Conditions - specify and set conditions for how data and other reports elements are displayed and hide and filter-out unwanted data at run-time
  • Filters - creates definitions that limit which data appears at what level of detail and which data does not appear
  • Advanced Filters - creates definitions with multiple conditions
  • Parameterized Filters - reruns report using new run-time parameter values
