New to BIRT?
Eclipse BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) is an Eclipse Foundation open source project initiated and co-led by Actuate Corporation. BIRT Exchange is a developer community site for users of BIRT and other Actuate technologies for reporting and java development.
Version 1.0 of Eclipse BIRT was released in June 2005 and in its first three years, was downloaded more than three million times. Major software vendors like IBM, BEA, Borland and Zend have incorporated BIRT into their product lines. It is the only top-level Eclipse project focused on Business Intelligence.
BIRT and the Problem it Solves
The BIRT project is a visual report development environment, reporting engine and assorted tools for creating rich, interactive reports in a variety of formats.
Whether deployed as a stand-alone Business Intelligence project or as an integral part of a business application, reports are user-facing and are therefore a significant part of how an application, data warehouse or department is judged. Unfortunately, reports often take a back seat to the development of other technologies and end up being hand-coded near the end of a project as an after-thought. This limits the completeness and range of reports, which can hinder the overall adoption of any Business Intelligence or application initiative.
Once reports are deployed, users start to realize what information they really need and start asking for enhancements such as additional output formats, layouts, groupings, and sorting criteria; and the ability to specify report parameters, calculate summary values on data, and create charts. Modifying hand-coded reports to meet these requests is very cumbersome. Ironically, the more successful the initiative, the more requests you get for modifications. BIRT was founded to help avoid this dilemma.
