Enable Pop Ups for iPortal

Main Page | Discussion | Edit | History | Help | Switch to MediaWiki mode

Actuate iPortal makes extensive use of browser pop-up windows to display reports, display dialogs for requesting reports, etc. However, many browsers block pop-ups because of their notorious association with ads. This article explains how to enable pop-ups, for iPortal only, for two common browsers: Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2.

Further, if you use the e.Spreadsheet product in Internet Explorer, you must grant the correct security permissions so that IE can open an Excel spreadsheet.

Symptoms

If your browser blocks iPortal pop-ups, you will see an error dialog like this:

Error message when Pop-ups are blocked

This may not happen all the time. For example, your browser might allow the Report Viewer to open when you run and view a report from a link in a folder listing, but not when you request to run a report and save the output. In any case, if you see this dialog, you must enable pop-ups for iPortal to proceed.

Although the dialog suggests you can avoid the issue by holding down the "Ctrl" key while clicking, this trick does not work when clicking on a button. Instead, you'll need to enable pop-ups for iPortal.

If you try to view an e.SpreadSheet report, but nothing happens, then IE is probably preventing iServer Express from launching Excel.

Enable iPortal Pop-ups for Firefox 2

  • Choose ToolsOptions... from the main menu.

The following dialog appears:

Firefox Options Dialog

If the check-box for "Block pop-up windows" is unchecked then you've enabled all pop-up windows, and iPortal will work fine. If, however, the box is checked, then:

  • Click on the Exceptions button adjacent to "Block pop-up windows".

The following dialog appears:

Firefox Allowed Sites - Popups Dialog

  • Enter the name of the machine that runs iPortal and iServer Express. If they are running on the same machine as the browser, you can enter "localhost" as shown in the illustration.
  • Click Allow.
  • Repeat for any other machines that run iPortal.
  • Click Close to close the Allowed Sites dialog.
  • Click OK to close the Options dialog.

Repeat the above steps for each computer that will access iPortal.

Enable iPortal Pop-ups for Internet Explorer 7

  • Click on the Privacy tab.

If the check-box for "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" is unchecked then you've enabled all pop-up windows, and iPortal will work fine. If, however, the box is checked, then:

  • Click on the Settings button adjacent to "Turn on Pop-up Blocker".

The following dialog appears:

IE Pop-up Blocker Settings Dialog

  • Click Add.
  • Repeat for any other machines that run iPortal.
  • Click Close to close the Allowed Sites dialog.
  • Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog.

Repeat the above steps for each computer that will access iPortal.

Grant iServer Express Permission to Launch Excel

If IE has the wrong security settings, then when you try to view an e.SpreadSheet report in Excel, nothing will happen and IE may emit a "bleep." Here's how to fix it.

  • Choose ToolsInternet Options from the main menu.
  • Click on the Security tab.

The following dialog appears:

IE Internet Options Dialog - Security

  • Select the Local Intranet icon as shown.
  • Click the Sites button.

The following dialog appears:

IE Local Intranet Dialog

  • Click the Advanced button.

The following dialog appears:

IE Local Intranet - Advanced Dialog

  • Type "http://localhost" in the "Add this website to the zone" field as shown. (Note: if iServer Express is on a machine other than your local machine, type that machine name in place of "localhost.")
  • Click Add.
  • Click Close.
  • Click OK in the Local intranet dialog.
  • Click OK in the Internet Options dialog.

Your e.Spreadsheet reports should now display in Microsoft Excel®, if Excel is installed.
